Aspiring to Greatness

The people of Johannesburg aspire to greatness whether it is education, sports, art or careers. This message is conveyed through the interaction between two dancers, where the younger one aspires to be like the older dancer in the setting of the Joburg Ballet studio surrounded by the structural beauty of the city.

City of Transformation
In a city exploding with diversity, a plethora of iconic buildings create a unique landscape that reflects our inhabitants. The Hilbrow Tower, Sentech Tower, Ponte Tower, Orlando Towers, Soccer City Stadium, Nelson Mandela Bridge and Gautrain add to the culture, technology and development of the city. The poster represents the unification of these iconic landmarks into a symbol of Johannesburg’s unity through a supporter, walking through the city, proudly sporting makarapa and blowing a vuvuzela. The supporter represents this transformation by serving as a culmination of the cultural landmarks.

!ndiafrica Background
A Shared Future is a unique approach to foster a People-to-People (P2P) understanding with Africa by inviting creative exchanges between young Africans and Indians through a multidisciplinary contest series and a Young Visionaries fellowship program. This initiative aims to create a dynamic platform for students and professionals across India and Africa to collaborate through competition, innovation and entrepreneurship. Forty institutions in South Africa participate in the Indiafrica compete, collaborate and co-create ventures.

The contest series, in the areas of Business Plans, Essay Writing, Photography and Poster Design, helps to create a platform for talented young Indians and Africans to exchange ideas about emergent realities, successes and challenges, and explore future collaborations in business, design and culture.
Paul Luhdo, Graphic Design FADA, Poster Design winner, awarded his certificate by the acting Indian High Commissioner of India to South Africa, HE Armstrong Changsan.

The Young Visionaries fellowship programme, seeks to identify promising young entrepreneurs in India & Africa and offer them opportunities for growth and collaboration. INDIAFRICA aims to forge meaningful bonds between youth from both geographies; inspire new possibilities of collaboration and encourage recognition of diverse nations as interdependent creative problem solvers with unique and invaluable resources and talents.

The poster is an image of Johannesburg that is highly distorted but within the distortion exists a sense of beauty. The image shows the city divided up into many strips representing the daily hassles we go through, which is portrayed through our city fragmented. This fragmentation prevents us from seeing the city the way it should be seen. However, if we put together all the fragmented pieces, we could get the larger view that goes beyond all the daily chores, making us perceive the true beauty that is the city itself.

The Street is my Canvas
The city of Johannesburg has plenty of street art that pushes freedom of speech and creates beauty on the blandness of tar and concrete. This is what led me to create a graffiti piece using a real wall and digital illustration.

Digital illustration is the key style used for my poster. After several attempts resulting in a bright and simplistic layout style, I realized the essence of Johannesburg was not being portrayed. So, I started again, keeping in mind the one aspect of the city that inspired me the most – Graffiti.
