Thuthuka Award Winners 2014-2015

This year’s winner of the Thuthuka Awards, Themba Mantshiyo is one of six very talented, dedicated, skilled and creative students registered at the Jewellery Department of the University of Johannesburg. 

Arguably the most promising group of students I have ever had the privilege of teaching, I taught them in their first and second year. Two students, Milda and Themba, received their basic skills training at FET colleges before enrolling for the university programme in design and manufacture. 

Amongst them is a talented and creative individual, Zadie Becker (Second Prize – achievement award), who matriculated with 9 distinctions. Working as a closely-knit group they compliment each other on all levels, the perfect incubator situation to foster the next generation of young jewellery designer makers. Their well-deserved awards are therefore a timeous accolade on their journey of creative development. The exhibition showcases a diverse range of design concepts and ideas for shoe accessories and is open daily, Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:00. The exhibition runs until 12 March.

Last year, the thuthuka jewellery development project took another step forward by introducing young mentors. We’ve matched postgraduates with community jewellery students to provide hem with hands-on teaching and mentorship from their peers. These ‘twinnings’ have been intensely focused, inspiring and fun for everyone involved. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we are encouraged to continue the teamwork in the future.

Young South African contemporary jewellery designers come into their own

Adjudication for the 2014 Thuthuka Jewellery Awards for young aspirant contemporary jewellers is completed. The competition, in its seventh year, is supported by the partnership between the Department of Arts and Culture and the Thuthuka Jewellery Development Programme. 

The intention of the Thuthuka Jewellery Awards is to showcase the best of South Africa’s young up and coming jewellery designers, who are learning jewellery making skills at community jewellery schools or at tertiary jewellery design departments, and who have had the additional advantage of having been mentored in contemporary design through the Thuthuka  Jewellery mentorship programme.

With a high number of entries from jewellery design students across four provinces in South Africa, the Thuthuka Jewellery Awards is established as the industry benchmark for innovation and excellence in the design of contemporary handmade jewellery .

The 2014 competition focused on the fashion industry and in particular on accessories, in this instance shoes, aptly captured in the theme ‘Sho! Shoe Jewellery?’ Students have been challenged to construct multifunctional contemporary pieces inspired by the South African insect. Entrants were judged on how they  interpreted the natural shapes, textures and unique patterning of insects and translated these into multifunctional jewellery pieces that can double up as shoe trimming, beautiful jewellery or hair accessories.

Founder of the Thuthuka Development Programme, Carola Ross, says, “With the fashion industry as the focal point for this year’s competition, entrants have had to raise the level excellence in both design innovation and manufacturing to create sturdy, wearable and beautiful multifunctional handmade pieces. The standard of entries we have received this year is testament to the critical insight students have gained into the principles of contemporary design and public preference.”

According to Ross, the competition is aimed at providing a platform for student jewellers to have their work professionally showcased. The competition theme in the past has been aligned to practical design-related industry sectors such as homeware, tableware, lighting and now, fashion. The intention is that this additional experience could ultimately broaden their employment opportunities. The exposure through the annual Thuthuka Awards exhibition also benefits entrants in building an industry profile and public interest in their work. Due to the growing popularity of the competition among the South African design community and the broader public, the work of the finalists will be showcased in an exhibition from at the FADA Gallery at the University of Johannesburg, Bunting road Campus, Auckland Park, from Tuesday 17 February to 11 March 2015.

The Thuthuka Jewellery Development Programme is a Gauteng-based peer mentorship programme that provides a mentorship programme in  jewellery design and manufacturing to jewellery students from FET colleges and community jewellery schools across four provinces in South Africa.University jewellery design students also participate in the competition. The curriculum is focused on enhancing innovation and excellence in the production of contemporary handmade jewellery.

The Thuthuka Jewellery Awards is an annual competition that provides a national platform for student jewellers to have their work professionally showcased. Winning designs are awarded bursaries as well as prizes in the form of the tools essential to the jeweller’s practice to galvanise their entry into industry.

FADA 2015 Showcase Exhibition.

This exhibition showcases senior students work, representing the following departments: Architecture, Interior, Industrial, Fashion, Jewellery, Communication Design and Multi Media. The exhibition is aimed at first time FADA registering students, presenting them with an opportunity to view the diverse range of creative output within disciplines in the Faculty during 2014.

Visual Art will be represented by two Masters students, Sophia van Wyk and AdenaRichardson. Their exhibitions can be viewed in the FADA Gallery - a closing event is scheduled for later in the evening commencing at 18:30.

Yoga is an ancient set of physical, mental and spiritual practices and disciplines originating from India. The aim of the practice is to attain a state of permanent peace of mind, through training, uniting and aligning the body, mind and breath of the practitioner.

The best-known part of yoga is the physical practice (also called asana practice), which consists of a series of postures designed to improve one’s strength, flexibility and balance. Besides the physical practice yogis also use breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques.

about steven heyman

Steven worked in the corporate world for 12 years, traveling around the African continent to develop new business and start up and manage new offices for a Belgian company. He is originally from Belgium and found a new home in South Africa since 2006. During those years of working in the corporate world, yoga has been an amazing tool for him in maintaining a clear mind and a healthy lifestyle while working in a stressful environment.

After becoming a registered vinyasa yoga instructor he decided to leave the corporate world, start Yoga Works and use his experience and yoga to help office workers de-stress and be healthy.

His classes always carry an element of surprise and challenge. Their aim is to leave you inspired, motivated and full of energy for the working day or week ahead.
